Roy Lichtenstein
I can see the whole room... and there’s nobody in it!, (1961)
Oil and graphite on canvas
48 3/8 x 48 in. (122.7 x 121.8 cm)
Acquired 1961 from the artist

The following is an excerpt from: Christie’s New York. (1988). Contemporary art from the Tremaine Collection, (9 November 1988). (Introduction by Tracy Atkinson, Curator of the Tremaine Collection), (p. 44).

"I can see the whole room.. and there’s nobody in it! is one of the earliest examples of Lichtenstein’s cartoon imagery where he imitates newspaper printing by applying benday dots to the face and uses a balloon to frame the legend. This technique separates the print from the twentieth-century tradition of incorporating lettering into the body of the composition and allows the balloon to act as a significant part of the painting. I can see the whole room... and there’s nobody in it! was executed a year prior to his first exhibition of cartoon paintings at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, in Feb. - March 1962."

The current location of Roy Lichtenstein’s I can see the whole room... and there’s nobody in it! is unknown. (Click to see a photo of the artwork.)
