Jackson Pollock
Frieze, (1953-55)
Oil on canvas
26 x 86 in. (66 x 218.4 cm)
Acquired 1956 from Sidney Janis Gallery

The following is an excerpt from: Wadsworth Atheneum. (1984). The Tremaine Collection: 20th Century masters; The spirit of Modernism exhibition catalogue, p. 63 with photo of artwork. (Exhibition dates: 26 February - 29 April 1984).

"Pollock worked on Frieze over a two-year period, finishing shortly before his fatal automobile accident in 1956. Many of Pollock’s last works return to issues that concerned him in earlier stages in his career, and Frieze particularly recalls an untitled work of 1937 in its color and the thick impasto brushstroke which spreads like licking flames across the canvas. Distinctive of this and other late works is Pollock’s use of the brush, which he had rejected in the series of black and white drip canvases of the early 1950s. The result of combining bold brushwork with drippings of paint is a lush web of strong primary color overlaid by a swirling lattice of aluminum paint."

Jackson Pollock’s Frieze is in the collection of Glenstone, Potomac, Maryland. (Click the link to see a photo of the artwork.)
