The following is an excerpt from: Wadsworth Atheneum. (1984). The Tremaine Collection: 20th Century masters; The spirit of Modernism exhibition catalogue, p. 150 with photo of artwork. (Exhibition dates: 26 February - 29 April 1984).

"Van Doesburg, the founder of the De Stijl journal, moved to Paris in 1923, and with Cornelis van Eesteren embarked upon an architectural project, the Maison Patriculière. Together they constructed models for the house, and van Doesburg created a series of drawings that emulated van Eesteren’s axonometric designs. These drawings proved to be a turning point in van Doesburg’s career, for they introduced the diagonal— a device which suggested space and resulted in his break with Mondrian. The Maison Patriculière was never built, but the models and the van Doesburg drawings were exhibited amid other De Stijl architectural projects at Léonce Rosenberg’s Galerie de l’Effort Moderne in 1923. This exhibition had an immediate effect on the Parisian avant-garde and provided a link between the De Stijl and Purist movements."

Two decades later, Space-time construction #3, (1923), continued to have impact. It was a key work in the Miller Company Collection of Abstract Art’s Painting toward architecture exhibition (1947-52, 28 venues). Since that time, the work was influential to the practice of noted architect Harry Seidler. In 1992, he acquired the artwork, which was donated to the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra in 2010. (Click the link to see a photo of the artwork.) In a traveling, international exhibition on Seidler’s work, Van Doesburg’s Space time-construction #3 was shown as a key influence.
