The following is an excerpt from: Miller Company Collection of Abstract Art. (1948). Painting toward architecture, p. 86. [Essay by Henry-Russell Hitchcock; foreword by Alfred H. Barr, Jr.; introduction by Burton Tremaine; acknowledgements by Emily Hall Tremaine, art director; certain artwork entries by Mary Chalmers Rathbun; graphic design by Bradbury Thompson].

"This particular Merzbild is unusually architectonic in scale and composition and hence not remote in its architectural suggestion... the little bit of commonplace printed matter, the very nub of the picture, can suggest how the commercial necessity for a sign on a building need not vulgarize the design but may actually complement aesthetically the severest and most rigidly architectural composition."

The current location of Kurt Schwitters’s Merzbild, (c. 1922) is unknown.
