Emily Hall Tremaine - diamond skull publicity (1940)

Almost 70 years before Damien Hirst’s publicity-driving diamond skull, arts figure Emily Hall Tremaine did the same, but became the diamond skull herself, wearing in today’s value, 14.5-220 million in diamonds. This generated media coverage across America and beyond. (Before this, Emily occupied the American media with the stylish announcement of her second marriage.) Seven months after the diamonds event, Emily dove into shocking publicity, suing her second husband and accusing him of being pro-Nazi. Sometimes photos of Emily wearing the diamonds were re-used and accompanied the shocking articles...

In 1940, arts figure Emily Hall Tremaine (1908-87) previously known as Emily Spreckels, wore a reported 500k or 1m worth of diamonds to the Beaux Arts Ball in New York. The amount of 1m is estimated at 14.5-220m in today’s worth. (See https://www.measuringworth.com/calculators/uscompare.) It is thought her doing this was partly a statement that she had arrived into a higher profile tier after marrying a Spreckels, and at the same time, a piss take. She was reported to have had armed guards with her.

This "media event" shows "unity / variety" across the media and is pre-Warhol. The difference is, Emily, a self-made master of media, was doing it across wire services, and had done so since about 1935.

This micro-site and webpage are packed with a lot of new information clarifying Emily’s work and life.

See the compiled media coverage below.

For more information about Emily’s crazy and dangerous pre-1945 life, see the section "I. Mystery, danger & misunderstandings: Emily Hall Tremaine in the 1930s".

Pre-Warhol
Unity
&
Variety

See the later "collaboration" of Emily with Andy Warhol. In 1962, Emily advised that Andy— for the famous Marilyn Monroe diptych— put the two panels showing "rise" and "fall" side by side. He agreed, then she bought the artwork which she sold to Tate Modern, London in 1980.

One wonders how much Andy Warhol knew about the late 1930s publicity queen Emily, whose national media coverage included photos and scandal shown in Pittsburgh area media.
