Footnotes
[1] This chapter in part draws on essays published as Supangkat and Wright, 1990, and Wright, 1990.
[2] Affandi is the only modern artist in South-East Asia to merit mention in the standard textbook of South-East Asian art— four sentences in the very last paragraph of the book (Rawson, 1990: 275).
[3] To a lesser degree, the same is true of S. Sudjojono, who died in 1986. However, I did not have the opportunity to interview him personally or see and photograph a representative selection of his work from all periods of his life. Furthermore, he is the subject of the late Sanento Yuliman’s Ph.D. dissertation (1981) which hopefully will be published as a monograph.
[4] Where no other reference is given, quotations are taken from an interview with Affandi in November 1987.
