"This Cubist masterpiece dates from the autumn of 1913, when Gris was painting in the town Céret, near the Spanish border with his compatriot Pablo Picasso. It was a crucial period in the development of Gris’s career, which in turn, had a powerful effect on the subsequent evolution of Cubism. Lengthy discussions with Picasso led Gris to consciously work against the prevailing improvisational qualities that were key to the work Braque and Picasso had thus far produced. Though Gris retained much of Cubism’s essential syntax, the unique strain he devised emanated with a far greater sense of clarity through a more pronounced structure and equilibrium; the ambiguous, shifting uncertainties of Cubism were transformed by Gris into a regular, rhythmic system of shading over gleaming, icy surfaces and sharp, tightly organized, crystalline facets, qualities which are nowhere more evident than in the pictures painted at Céret."
