John Chamberlain
Arch Brown, (1962)
Welded automobile metals
37 x 38 x 29 in. (94 x 96.5 x 73.7 cm)
Acquired 1962 from Leo Castelli Gallery

The following is an excerpt from: Wadsworth Atheneum. (1984). The Tremaine Collection: 20th Century masters; The spirit of Modernism exhibition catalogue, p. 83 with photo of artwork. (Exhibition dates: 26 February - 29 April 1984).

"John Chamberlain first incorporated used car parts in his work in 1957 after being struck by the sculptural possibilities of two fenders he saw at Larry River’s house in Southampton. The fenders, hoods, and other miscellaneous car parts that comprise Arch Brown have been punched, compressed and welded into a tight, dynamic configuration. Chamberlain not only welcomed the ironic reference to the big car boom of the late fifties and early sixties asserted by these freely accessible found objects, but the bright enamel coating of the original cars offered a solution to the problem of introducing color into metal sculpture without compromising the material. The title Arch Brown, alludes to a break with a traditional heroic art form as Chamberlain’s colorful auto-scraps replace the white triumphal arches of the classical past."

The current location of John Chamberlain’s Arch Brown is unknown.
