Structural II, (1924)
Gouache on paper
12 x 9 in. (30.5 x 22.9 cm)
Acquired 1947 from Nierendorf Gallery
(A01172; L01255-59)

The following is an excerpt from: Christie’s New York. (1991). Important Modern paintings from the Tremaine Collection, (5 November 1991). (Introduction by Tracy Atkinson, Curator of the Tremaine Collection; Director Emeritus, Wadsworth Atheneum), (p. 30).

"According to Sabine Rewald, Klee did a series of twelve such watercolors in 1924. ’Over a muted colored ground Klee painting—with a very fine brush— a white screen that seems spun out of lace, irregularly at that. Arranged in friezelike fashion, with here and there a diagonal or curved band, it also brings to mind the latticework of grated windows that Klee would have seen on his visit to Tunisia in 1914.’ (S. Rewald, Paul Klee, The Berggruen Klee Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1988, p. 187)."

The current location of Paul Klee’s Structural II is unknown. (Click to see a photo of the artwork.)
