Rolf Harris on Welsh art (TV series)

Press release by BBC Wales

Rolf Harris, the hugely popular entertainer and artist, was in Cardiff today to see his new self-portrait hung alongside the work of artist Shani Rhys-James, whose technique he copied to create the painting for a new TV series.

Rolf used a hand mirror to recreate Shani’s unique style, in which she paints self-portraits by viewing small sections of her reflected face in the mirror. Shani is due to come face to face with Rolf’s results tomorrow (Wednesday 16 February) in the National Museum Cardiff.

Rolf’s self-portrait, which will be on show through February, is one of five paintings he made for the new series, Rolf On Welsh Art, which starts on BBC One Wales on 16 February.

In each he learns about the life of an artist— the others are Rolf’s personal friend Sir Kyffin Williams, Graham Sutherland and Josef Herman— before tackling a work in each of their different styles.

He created two for the Josef Herman programme, after declaring his first attempt "not monumental enough" in reflecting Herman’s sculptural canvases.

Rolf will be giving a free public talk about the new series in the main foyer at the National Museum Cardiff on Wednesday 16 February, from 2pm.

The series starts on BBC One Wales on Wednesday 16 February. Viewers outside Wales can catch up with the programme via BBC iPlayer from 17 February.
