Made in Britain— Contemporary Art from the British Council Collection 1980 – 2010

Hong Kong Heritage Museum
No. 1 Man Lam Road, Shatin, Hong Kong
30 June – 9 October 2011

Made in Britain builds on the concept of The Future Demands Your Participation which took place at the Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai in early 2010 as part of the UK’s programme of cultural events for the Shanghai Expo. The exhibition aims to bring British art and the British Council Collection to a new audience, and ensure that the legacy of the UK’s participation in the Shanghai Expo is shared by audiences across China. Hong Kong is the third stop of this touring art exhibition in China that was previously touring in Chengdu and Xian.

Contemporary artists in the UK are known for being outgoing and proactive. They adopt a critical approach to art history by engaging actively with the art audience. Their artworks often reflect on or respond to social or cultural issues, trying to create a dialogue between contemporary art and the society. Their works are confident, often brash, thoughtful, sometimes shocking, but always challenging. These characteristics are common in many artists and their works featured in the Made in Britain exhibition.

Antony J. Chan, Head of Arts and Creative Industries at British Council Hong Kong, said ‘Since the 1930s, the British Council has been collecting British artworks and exhibits all over the world from both emerging and established UK artists. The Made in Britain exhibition strongly reflects the development and achievements of British contemporary arts in the past 30 years, which has become some sort of a mainstream activity in the UK society, easily accessed and appreciated by a wide general public. This is a rare exhibition which offers the audience a great view of many different forms and facets to British contemporary arts, created by the Turner Prize winners and nominees, and the YBAs [short for Young British Artists].’

Belinda Wong, Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, said “The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is delighted to host the third stop of this great tour, bringing contemporary British art to Hong Kong audience. Made in Britain features art works appearing between 1980 and 2010, this period saw a diversity of creative art forms deeply influenced by the political, social and cultural changes. These exhibits are epitomes of a macro environment, allowing viewers to closely examine the special features of British contemporary art.”
