Excerpt: "In May 1994 Damien Hirst curated an exhibition of works by 15 artists entitled Some Went Mad, Some Ran Away held at the Serpentine Gallery and several other venues. Apparently, this show broke all attendance records for the Serpentine. He included one of his own works, Away from the Flock, a glass tank containing the corpse of a Suffolk lamb obtained from a Guildford abattoir (cost of a live lamb £30, cost of killing it £5). The critic William Feaver noted: “Bubbles cling pathetically around the mouth and the saturated fleece has swollen like a life jacket.” Floating in formaldehyde, the lamb looked as if it was leaping in the air. The tank was placed at right angles to the gallery’s windows, creating the effect that the lamb was eager to escape to the green grass outside. It was a rather cruel and pathetic sight."
